Acknowledgments
Tetepare Descendants’ Association would like to acknowledge financial assistance from WWF
UK and in-kind support from WWF Solomon Islands, WWF Asia-Pacific Species Programme
and WWF Bismarck Solomon Seas Eco-region Programme for the publication of this
educational tool-kit. TDA also acknowledges CUSO which has made possible the opportunity
for the authors to work with TDA to strengthen its conservation and sustainable livelihoods
programme. The development of this tool kit would not have been possible without this
important logistical support.
In putting together this tool kit, the authors have used a number of publications including the
excellent “Drama in Environmental Education Guide: Fighting Poverty through the Protection
of the Environment” by Vanuatu’s Wan Smol Bag theatre group. We thank Wan Smol Bag
especially for Activities , 4 and 15, which we adapted to suit our purposes.
Our sincere thanks also go to TDA Ranger Kennedy Soapi, of Berozzi village, Rendova Island,
for providing the kastom story “Turtle and Swampy Hen” and to TDA Project Coordinator
Allan Tippet Bero for providing the kastom story “Turtle and Heron”. Thank you to Kisey Mae
for the excellent artwork in Activity 6, and thank you to WWF SI staff members Jackie Healy,
Salome Topo and Tingo Leve for their helpful comments and suggestions.
Lastly, a very big thank you goes to the forward thinking and hardworking teachers, schools
and communities who are working to conserve marine turtles through partnerships with TDA
and on their own.
We hope that teachers in Solomon Islands will find this a useful tool kit for sparking debate
among their students about the role of marine turtles in the lives of Pacific Islanders and that it
succeeds in raising awareness of the issues around these truly magnificent creatures and their
current plight.
