Activity 11

IDevice Icon Activity 11: Student Debate

Debates are often fun ways of challenging one’s perspective on an issue. In this activity,
students are divided into teams. Each team is given time to discuss their main lines of
argument. Each team is then given time to present their understanding of the issue. Each team
is then given time to answer the opposing team’s argument with a rebuttal.

Students learn how to express themselves in a coherent manner and how to develop a persuasive
argument to inform either an audience, or the opposing debate team. At the same time,
students learn to respect differences in opinion by understanding that there are very rarely
clear-cut answers or solutions to an issue.
