Topic Fifteen - Other Hive Problems

Objectives
  1. To learn some of the problems that may happen to a beehive
  2. To recognise the signs of these problems
  3. To learn some ways to fix the problems
  4. To review the learning that has taken place in the unit


Key Words:

Uniting Beehives – when you join 2 hives together to make one strong hive.  Usually you do this when one of the hives is weak and the other is strong.  OR you can do this when one hive has a queen and the other is queenless.

Laying Worker – when a hive loses its queen and some worker bees start to lay eggs.

Boost – a method of helping a weak hive.  You give the weak hive some brood from another hive.  When the brood emerges, it will stay in the weak hive and strengthen it.

Equalize – a method to help a weak hive.  You change the places of a weak and a strong hive. The field bees from the strong hive will fly back to the weak one.
